LOSING THE DIGNITY OF IDENTITY

Smarting under a crisis of identity, we seem to have shown eagerness to accept even unnecessary social practices followed elsewhere.

Kaunrias have arrived and are spreading; Dhan Teras is witnessed in surging crowds in jewellery shops ; functions like Engagement, Tilak, Sangeet, Haldi, Mehndi before wedding are now increasingly observed evn in middle class families..

.Days of Pravachans & Bhandaras have arrived. So also junk food.   The warmth and flavour of wedding feasts and the pleasure of serving food to the guests have become rarer.

Standing in a queue with a plate to pick a portion of"chicken lababdar" is the new experience, replacing the pleasure of "Kanika" and "Rasabali".

We are on overdrive ; aping. We don stylish libaas like Lehengas and Achkan. In the process of frenzied transformation, we have pushed behind the austere Odia festivities; the swing, the dance, the culinary delicacies, the Bhagbat Tungi, the Dhoti, the silk Panjabi with gold buttons.

We seem to be enjoying the loss-- the dignity of our identity.
