OUR PUBLIC HOSPITALS

India's District and Regional level public Hospitals have also been  meeting venues where the near and distant friends and relations gather to see and take care of the sick, adding strain and pain on the inadequate health and sanitation infrastructure of the hospitals.

This ever increasing phenomenon even facilitates ancillary commercial activity close to the Beds of the sick. One can see itinerant tea, snacks, fruit vendors and, even sellers of toiletries in the morning hours in various wards. Once I had spotted a newspaper vendor loudly reading out important headlines even inside an important Department of the Cuttack Medical College in late Nineties.

Even some recently established corporate hospitals seem reverential to this practice. India's public Hospitals have been, for centuries, centres offering / facilitating various modes of care as well that include blessings of the elders who come from distant places, round the clock paramedical help from the relations; willing errand boys who run to nearby pharmacy to get medicines, syringe , needle, bandage etc;.

With such an elaborate informal support system around a patient, the Doctors, on night duty, have little difficulty in having some sleep in peace .

In this situation, the Survivor, on reaching home, gets a hero's welcome and, the Dead, the respect of a fallen fighter.
